Toyota Drivers - SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL!
Check out this video:
http://autos.ca.msn.com/video?cp-doc...3-3e8b8728f691
So is anyone else alarmed by how many drivers do not understand how to shift their car into neutral. That would immediately stop the acceleration and still allow them to steer safely onto the side of the road. I understand in some instances drivers may not have time to react... but this guy was on the highway. OR could they restart the car even? Maybe that would reset the computer glitch?
And the person on the receiving end of the 911 call didn't even suggest that? Instead he had to wait for a cruiser and end up damaging two cars. ugh.
Anyway, this more than anything makes me think car drivers really need to be properly educated on how to use these machines. One simple move can save lives.

I totally agree...I've said it so many times before...know how to properly use a damn car!
Shift to neutral or turn off the damn engine! If you have the time to make a call to 911...you could have made a safe stop 5 times over already!
I hate how drivers are taught only how to "drive" a car rather than how certain things work!

It's really sad that people can't figure this stuff out. Now we need new cars saddled with crap like tpms, onstar, dbw, and many other technologies designed to work around the fact that the people operating vehicles are functionally retarded. Driver education and re-education need to be revisited IMO.

if the pedal is stuck in the accelerating mode and you shift into neutral wouldn't you blow your engine? unless they have a rev limiter which would be siick!
i guess you have two options..
1. shift to neutral and have a blown motor
2. plow your car into another vehicle, building, or a pedestrian

You better believe that blown motor would be covered under warranty (none of the affected vehicles are old enough not to be covered at this point), and nobody gets hurt, easy decision.

I never thought of that what is the potential damage of a blown engine... could it actually hurt an occupant? Even if it is over revving at least maybe once the car is slowing down the operator will be able to think more clearly and turn it off once they've steered out of danger.

If you turn off your car you lose steering, so you'd have to turn it back on and hope the problem was OK... if the accelerator is physically jammed, then you'd begin accelerating again.
